Provost Presents Faculty Research Lecture: Chong Eun Ahn at Brooks Library In-Person

Affective Remembering and Historical Inquiry of the Japanese Empire: Reading Dictée and Underground Village

Dr. Chong Eun Ahn will present her research on two feminist writers’ attempts at listening to the marginalized cries from the Japanese empire between 1930-1945: Kang Kyong-ae’s The Underground Village [Chihach’on] and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictée. By examining the two stories’ attention to the struggles and challenges of marginalized individuals in the Japanese empire, her lecture will explore the relationship between affective remembering and historical inquiry of the Korean past in the Japanese empire. Grounded in appreciation for the effectiveness of affective analysis as a powerful tool to communicate and remember past experiences, Dr. Ahn’s research emphasizes the need for further inquiry into uneven power structures in order to capture the full texture of imperial experience.

There will be a reception following the presentation. No registration is required. For more information contact Wendy Spacek, Arts and Humanities Librarian, CWU Libraries.
